The Surprising National Security Role of America's "Best Idea"
Happy 4th! My latest FDD piece published in RealClearDefense...
Hi Subscribers!
Happy Independence Day! Hope you will read my latest publications with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), including a piece published by RealClearDefense today, July 4th.
The Surprising National Security Role of America's "Best Idea"
My family’s recent visit to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons was a source of inspiration for this essay. While we missed famed mother bear Grizzly 399, we did see other magnificent grizzly and black bears in the wild — with cubs!
During a speech at Yosemite in 2016, President Obama shared about his own trip to Yellowstone as a child: “I remember being an 11-year-old kid, the first time I saw a moose…in a lake, the first time we drove over a hill and suddenly there was a field full of deer, the first time I saw a bear and her cub. That changes you. You are not the same after that.”
He’s right.
And in case you missed it, I also published an article in The Algemeiner on May 14 during the tumultuous spring on campus. Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel led The Algemeiner’s advisory board until he passed away in 2016. Read the article here:
Some Campus Protesters Despise America as Much as They Do Israel
May 14: As the epicenter of protest moves to commencement and students leave campus, an opportunity to assess what just happened and prepare for what’s next. A recent piece for FDD published in The Algemeiner...
And I published this April 29 Insight with FDD on the use of the anonymous app Sidechat to spread antisemitism at Columbia. This is my second piece on anonymous apps on college campuses. The university president called the Sidechat app “poisonous” and emphasized, “the most egregious cases that we’ve seen of antisemitism” have been on identity-masking social media.
Let’s hope colleges do something about these apps before students return in the fall.
The Out-of-Control Social Media App Spreading Antisemitism at Columbia
Sidechat and others like it (Yik Yak for example) have been facilitating headaches and heartaches and worse on campuses for a long time.

Thank you all for reading and for caring as much as I do about raising Americans and how we can do better. Hope you and your families have a wonderful 4th of July!
Sincerely,
